No group insurance or pension plan at work?

I propose a plan to your employer — group insurance, VRSP or group RRSP — without ever revealing that the idea came from you. You benefit like all your colleagues.

10 employeesdesignated on June 30 (and 5 on December 31 before): with no qualifying plan, the employer must offer a VRSP
$680,000at 65 with an 8% plan, vs $340,000 saving 4% alone
$2,052per adult per year: combined maximum premium + deductible of the public drug plan

The advantages of a group plan for you

A hidden raise

Every dollar your employer puts in your retirement plan is extra pay that grows throughout your career.

Group premiums

Risk is shared among all employees: coverage generally costs less than individual insurance.

No medical questionnaire

Basic life and disability insurance are often granted without evidence of insurability, up to a maximum. Valuable if your health isn’t perfect.

Your salary protected

Long-term disability can replace part of your salary up to 65 if illness or an accident keeps you from working.

Drugs, health and dental

The private plan replaces the RAMQ public plan and can cover your spouse and children, plus paramedical and dental care.

Automatic saving

Contributions come off your pay. In a group RRSP, tax withheld at source goes down immediately.

Help when things go wrong

The employee assistance program offers confidential counselling: psychological, financial, legal, family.

A fuller, indexed retirement

Your plan adds to the QPP and Old Age Security to close the gap with what you really need in retirement.

The numbers: what a good plan changes over a career

Alex is 25 and earns $45,000. Salary grows 3% a year until 65. Alone, Alex saves 4% of salary; with a group plan, the employer matches the contribution (8% in total).

⏳ Waiting is costly: with the same plan, starting at 35 instead of 25 reduces capital by about $222,000; at 45, by about $405,000.

Inflation: $1,000 today will be worth only $453 in 40 years at 2% inflation, $307 at 3%. Quebec prices rose 4.5% in 2023, 2.3% in 2024 and 2.4% in 2025 (ISQ).

Annual retirement income in today’s dollars: Old Age Security ($762.50/month, Oct.–Dec. 2026), estimated QPP pension and plan savings, compared with a 70% income need.

Frequently asked questions

Will my employer know I contacted you?

No. I present the approach as a normal business contact with the company. Your name, words and request are never mentioned.

Is my employer required to offer a plan?

In Quebec, an employer with at least 10 designated employees (18 or older, at least one year of continuous service) on June 30, and at least 5 on December 31 of the previous year, and no qualifying retirement savings plan must offer a VRSP. It is not required to contribute. Group insurance is not mandatory.

What if the employer declines?

I cannot guarantee it will agree. In that case, I offer you individual solutions for the essentials: disability insurance, life insurance, RRSP or TFSA.

I already have my spouse’s insurance. Is it still useful?

Often, yes: you can waive some health benefits already covered elsewhere, but disability and retirement remain personal and follow your salary.

What does your help cost?

Our conversation is free. If a plan is implemented, I am paid by the chosen insurer or financial institution, as regulations provide.
