Huit questions — moins de 2 minutes

43 % of Canadians have no none life insurance. Do they know it? Most do not.

A LIMRA study shows that only 57 % of Canadians hold a life insurance policy — and many of those who think they are protected by their employer or their mortgage are, in reality, far less protected than they believe. Eight questions are enough to know where you stand.

Source : Life Happens study, LIMRA, reported by Conseiller.ca (August 2025). 57 % of Canadians hold a policy — which means 43 % have none.

Against the grain

« I am already covered at work » is the costliest myth in the business

That is not my opinion — it is one of the four traps best documented by the industry to explain why so many families end up under-protected without knowing it. Here are two, by way of example.

Ce qu'on croit

« My group insurance at work covers me. »

Group coverage often amounts to one or two years of salary. Generous on the face of it — but rarely enough to replace an income over 10, 15 or 20 years, and it disappears the day the job ends.

What is true

Coverage that does not follow your life

Individual coverage belongs to you, whatever the employer. A short assessment shows the real gap between what you have and what your family would need — without assuming, without guessing.

Self-assessment

Eight questions. A clear picture.

The first five identify your main risk areas in insurance of persons — life, disability, critical illness. The last three help prepare an answer that matches your situation. This test does not replace a complete needs analysis.

1. If your income stopped tomorrow, how long would your family hold out on your current savings and insurance?

2. Does your only life insurance coverage come from your employer?

3. Do you have disability coverage — the inability to work because of illness or accident?

4. Do you have critical illness coverage — cancer, heart attack, stroke?

5. Has your situation changed since your last insurance review — a child, a mortgage, a business, a promotion?

6. Who depends on you financially today?

This question and the next two do not change your result. They help prepare an answer that matches your situation.

7. Do you have a mortgage or significant debts outstanding?

8. Is an advisor currently looking after your file?
