Are your parents properly insured?

You help your children and, soon, your parents. Good planning on their side keeps their estate from becoming a financial headache for you.

Between your children and your parents, your budget is squeezed

Children's education on one side, ageing parents on the other: good planning on their side keeps you from paying out of pocket.

At death, a RRIF is taxed in full

Unless it is transferred to a spouse, the value of an RRSP or RRIF is added to income in the year of death. Life insurance provides the cash to pay that tax without draining the estate.

The family cottage can be costly to keep

At death, the capital gain on a cottage or rental property is taxable. Without cash, the estate sometimes has to sell the property the family wanted to keep.

Funeral costs: who pays up front?

They are paid by the estate, but children often advance them while waiting for settlement. Life insurance paid to a named beneficiary does not go through the estate and arrives quickly.

Inheriting your parents' debts?

In Quebec, an heir is not liable for debts beyond the value of the property received (art. 625 C.C.Q.), provided the liquidation rules are followed. But debts can wipe out the inheritance and force the sale of the family home.

Insuring a parent? It is possible

You can own a policy on your parent's life and pay the premium, with your parent's written consent. Simplified-issue products exist for older applicants.

Will and protection mandate

Without a will, the law decides how the estate is divided. Without a protection mandate, a relative must apply for tutorship in case of incapacity. These documents are prepared with a notary.

In one meeting: their insurance, the tax expected at death, debts and named beneficiaries. You will know exactly what to expect.

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most often before a first meeting. Short answers you can verify.

How can I check that Jean Carrière is registered with the AMF?

On the official register of the Autorité des marchés financiers, at lautorite.qc.ca, by searching “Jean Carrière” or certificate 259457. It is free and takes a minute. You also see the disciplines he is registered for, and any disciplinary measure if there were one.

What does “independent representative” actually mean?

An advisor registered with the AMF who is not tied to any insurer by an exclusivity agreement. He works through a managing general agent — here Groupe Cloutier — which gives access to contracts from several companies rather than one company's catalogue.

How are you paid?

By commission from the insurer selected. That is the usual method of remuneration in the profession. You are entitled to ask the question on any contract, and you are entitled to an answer.

Does the first meeting cost anything?

No. The exploratory meeting is a first conversation with no obligation: going over your situation, answering your questions, and seeing whether working together makes sense. No recommendation is made at that stage.

What do your licences cover — and what do they not?

Three disciplines: financial security advisor, representative in group insurance and annuities, and scholarship plan dealer representative. Not covered: property and casualty insurance (auto, home, business), referred to a licensed firm, and mutual funds — the investment offer runs through segregated funds, which are insurance contracts.

Is my personal information protected?

It is used only to analyse your needs, formulate recommendations and follow up on your file. It is kept securely for the period required by regulation, then destroyed or anonymised. You may at any time ask to see it, have it corrected, or withdraw your consent.

What if I am dissatisfied?

Send me a written complaint. You receive an acknowledgement, then a written response within the prescribed time limits. If it does not satisfy you, you may ask that the file be transferred to the AMF, which offers a free complaint examination service. AMF: 1 877 525-0337.
