Frequently asked questions
How much does an insurance quote cost?
Nothing. The quote is free and carries no obligation. You then decide freely whether you want to go ahead.
Why use an advisor rather than going directly to an insurer?
An insurer only presents its own products. As a financial security advisor, I can compare products from several insurers and recommend the one that best fits your needs and budget.
Who can apply online?
The online form is for non-smokers aged 65 and under with no health condition to declare. If that is not your case, call me at 438 889-6474: several options may still be available and we will review them together.
What information do I need to provide?
Your contact details, date of birth, the type of insurance you are looking for and a few questions about smoking status and health. This information allows the premium to be estimated accurately.
Will I need a medical exam?
It depends on the insurer, the amount of coverage and your age. Some coverage only requires a questionnaire. I explain each insurer's requirements before you make a decision.
Is my information protected?
Yes. Your personal information is used only to prepare your quote and is handled confidentially, in accordance with Quebec's Law 25 on the protection of personal information.
Several insurers offer plans to small businesses with just a few employees. Eligibility conditions vary from one insurer to another: I show you the options available for the size of your team.
Am I required to offer a VRSP?
In Quebec, an employer with at least five eligible employees that does not already offer an eligible retirement savings plan through payroll deduction must offer a VRSP. A group RRSP can, under certain conditions, meet this obligation.
Are employer contributions deductible?
Generally, premiums and contributions paid by the employer are deductible for the business. In Quebec, however, the employer-paid portion of health and life insurance is a taxable benefit for the employee. Your accountant can confirm the tax treatment for your situation.
Will my employees need to fill out a medical questionnaire?
In many plans, part of the coverage is granted without evidence of insurability up to a certain amount. Above that, the insurer may require a questionnaire. I explain the rules of each proposal.
When should I start?
Ideally 60 to 90 days before the renewal date or the desired start date, to give insurers time to respond and you time to compare.
Can you review my current plan?
Yes. I compare your coverage, premiums and fees with what other insurers offer, and tell you frankly whether a change is worth it.
Sun vacations, cruises, family visits, study stays or business trips: outside Québec, the public plan reimburses only part of the care received, often far less than the actual bill. Travel insurance covers emergency care, repatriation and, depending on the contract, trip cancellation or interruption. I compare the coverage offered by our partners for you.
CruiseAt sea, the nearest hospital can be hours away.On-board care and medical evacuation from a ship are often payable on the spot. Make sure your contract expressly covers cruises, evacuation and repatriation.AviationPassenger or pilot: the difference matters. Most contracts cover commercial flights as a passenger, but exclude or limit piloting an aircraft and some private flights. If you fly, have it confirmed before you leave.Horseback ridingA fall from a horse can quickly mean a fracture.Recreational riding is generally covered, but some competitions or activities considered dangerous may be excluded. Read the list of excluded activities.HikingThe trail is far from everything — and so is help.Mountain rescue and helicopter transport can be very expensive. Check altitude limits and coverage for search and rescue costs.Skiing and winter sportsOff-piste or at a resort: not the same risk for the insurer.Resort downhill skiing is usually covered; off-piste, heli-skiing or competitions may be excluded. Choose a contract that covers what you will actually do.Scuba divingUnderwater, every metre counts.Scuba diving may be limited to a maximum depth or require a recognized certification. Hyperbaric chamber treatment must be covered.Family in the sunA sick child on vacation happens.A family contract often covers dependent children at low cost. Keep the 24/7 assistance number in your phone and call before seeking care, except in a life-threatening emergency.United States and road tripsIn the U.S., a simple emergency room visit can cost a fortune.U.S. health care is among the most expensive in the world, and the RAMQ reimburses only part of the costs. A road trip, even a few days long, deserves insurance.Business travelA meeting abroad doesn't rule out the unexpected.Check whether your group plan covers business travel, for how many days and up to what amount. An annual multi-trip plan is often more advantageous.Visitors to CanadaYour parents are coming to visit? Their home insurance isn't always enough.Visitors are not covered by the RAMQ. "Visitors to Canada" insurance covers emergencies during the stay; for the super visa, coverage of at least $100,000 valid for one year is required.
Why shop around for travel insurance?
Premiums vary widely from one insurer to another for similar coverage, especially after age 60.
Medical questionnaires and the notion of a "stable condition" differ: a good choice helps avoid a denied claim.
Limits (maximum amount, number of days, deductible) are not the same everywhere.
Credit card insurance often has age, duration and amount limits: it does not suit every trip.
An advisor compares exclusions, not just price: that is where unpleasant surprises happen.
Visiting Canada or the United States: the advantage of insurance bought in Canada
"Visitors to Canada" insurance is designed for care received here: premiums in Canadian dollars, claims handled by a Canadian insurer.
For the super visa (parents and grandparents), Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada requires medical insurance of at least $100,000, valid for at least one year from entry.
Some visitor contracts also cover short side trips to the United States during the stay: check this option before crossing the border.
For Quebecers travelling to the U.S.: the RAMQ reimburses only part of the costs, while care there is very expensive.
For extended stays (snowbirds): to keep your health insurance, you must be present in Québec at least 183 days a year, except for exceptions set by the RAMQ.
10 travel protection tips
Buy coverage when you book: cancellation coverage also protects the days before departure.
Declare any change in health or medication before departure, even a minor one.
Keep the 24/7 assistance number and your contract number in your phone and on paper.
Call assistance before seeking care (except in a life-threatening emergency): some contracts require it.
Check the maximum duration per trip and extend coverage before it expires if you stay longer.
For several trips a year, compare with an annual multi-trip plan.
Carry your medication in its original container, with a copy of your prescriptions.
Keep all receipts and medical reports: they are essential for your claim.
Check the Government of Canada travel advisories before leaving: an "avoid all travel" advisory can limit coverage.
Read the list of excluded activities if you plan sports or adventure activities.
Mistakes to avoid when travelling
Leaving without insurance thinking the RAMQ or your credit card covers everything.
Forgetting to declare a medical condition or a recent change in treatment.
Buying insurance after the trip has started, when some coverage is no longer available.
Exceeding the number of covered days without extending the contract.
Going to a private clinic without contacting assistance, when the contract requires it.
Doing an excluded activity (piloting, off-piste, deep diving) without suitable coverage.
Skipping trip cancellation for an expensive package or a non-refundable cruise.
Driving after drinking alcohol: alcohol-related accidents are often excluded.
Answer from an advisor, at no cost and with no obligation. Offered to Québec residents and visitors staying in Québec. General information: the coverages, exclusions and conditions of the contract prevail.
